5.13 Some Like It Hoth

Follow along! The episode guide for “Some Like It Hoth” is in Finding Lost — Season 5, pp. 187-196, and includes a sidebar comparing Lost to Star Wars.

This was a fun, sort of standalone episode, and the one in the season I had to write up in England while I was on a trip, downloading it and watching it on a laptop only once. Thank goodness it wasn’t the week of “Dead Is Dead”!

Fun things I noticed:
• “I’m in the circle of tr—” “Get out!” Hahahaha!
• That dead Swan station guy looks like Russell Brand. I never noticed that before.
• I love that Miles somehow thought the phrase “bounty hunter” would be in Hurley’s memoir. LOL!
• Mr. Grey is the chauffeur that Sookie and Bill glamour at the beginning of S2 of True Blood.
• I have a confession to make: I love the word “douche.” It’s a GREAT insult. It’s just so satisfying. My husband thinks it’s uncouth (so I’m always sure to add the word “bag” to it when using it around him). But I still love it. I’m so happy Hurley and Miles use it in this episode.
• Chang looks like he’s going to laugh when Hurley says, “Polar bear poop, got it.”
• When Roger tells Jack that Kate reassured him, Jack looks down as if to say, “Oh, Kate… what am I gonna do with you?”
• I LOVE Hurley making small talk in the back of the van!
• “Ever had one of those days where you feel like the Dutch boy with his finger in the… Doc!” HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
• How much do I love Baby Miles’ Dharma onesie?!

Things that have new meaning:
• WHO are the Shadow Seekers? This is one of the biggest questions raised in season 5. Bram says, “If you can’t answer the question, you’re not ready for the island.” So how do THEY know the answer to the question, or how to get there, or about the island in the first place? Are they children of DI? Children of defected Others? Children of people who were ejected from the island? Are they immortal Others who were ejected from the island?

My husband can usually be counted on for a quippy comment, and he came up with a good one while I was rewatching this episode. He was just passing through at the moment when we first see dead Alvarez on the stretcher with the bloody hole in his head. So, my husband asked what happened to him, and I explained about the filling being yanked out the hard way, and he said, “They’re putting in iron fillings now, huh?” And I said, “Good point”, and made a note to look into this a bit further. I was wondering about the amalgam that dentists use to fill cavities, and if any of those metals are even a little magnetic. I didn’t dig real deep, but in checking Wikipedia, here’s what I found. Dental amalgam is made up of varying percentages of the following: silver, tin, copper, zinc, and mercury. And none of these metals showed up on a short list of materials that can be magnetized and are also strongly attracted to a magnet: iron, nickel, cobalt, some rare earth metals and some of their alloys. So, the writers strayed from reality on this point, but I suppose it can easily be forgiven in such a make-believe story. Just go with it!

I know how hard it is to write legibly in a moving vehicle, even on paved streets. So I think it’s a real stretch that Hurley or Miles or anyone else would be able to actually read what Hurley wrote in his Dharma notebook while the Dharma van was bouncing along the Dharma path.

I like that Hurley’s talk with Miles was what caused him to take that evening stroll through the village to look in on Chang and Baby Miles. And I was trying hard to figure out if Baby Miles was wearing a Dharma onesie, or wrapped in a Dharma blankie. Thanks for clearing that up, Nikki!

Hoo-boy. Just remember that you’re the one who brought this up. I started snickering when I read that you love the word “douche”. WELL. There’s a pretty great, very satirical episode of “South Park” called “Douche and Turd”. It’s from the most excellent eighth season, and here’s a short synopsis: PETA demonstrates against the use of a cow as South Park Elementary’s mascot, so the student body is forced to choose a new one. As the election approaches, Kyle tries to convince everyone that his candidate, a giant douche, is better than Cartman’s nominee, a turd sandwich. If you’ve never seen this episode, sneak away where the little kiddywinks can’t see, and enjoy one of Matt & Trey’s best!

Nikki, in your questions for this episode, you asked why Naomi referred to deceased individuals “residing” on the Island. Is this because they’re only sort of dead, and not completely dead? That reminded me of Miracle Max in “The Princess Bride”: “There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, there’s usually only one thing that you can do – go through his clothes and look for loose change.” Ah, good times.

Good question about the shadow seekers, Nikki. When Bram & Co picked up Miles (ruining his fish taco), they seemed to know all about him. Yet they asked him the famous "what lies in the shadow" question and then waited for an answer, knowing he wouldn't know the answer. Might as well have asked him the snowman riddle.

I have one nitpick to add about this episode: Hurley asking Miles how to spell "bounty hunter." Um...those are pretty much fourth-grade level vocabulary words, aren't they? I realize they had him ask for humorous effect, but Hurley's not that dumb!

Interesting point about the fillings, Marebabe. Even if they were entirely magnetic, one would think that if a tiny blob of metal could be sucked right through your skull, you'd be in even worse danger from the keys in your pocket (ouch!) or the buckle on your belt.

I wonder if Miles ever confessed to not erasing the tape?

Can the DI not afford some decent school supplies? Jack was trying the use the crappiest eraser ever!

Love that Miles found the key to Apt 4 under a recurring-theme bunny statue!

Roger certainly is good at making messes - first Sayid's cell and now knocking over the table of supplies in the 'hospital' and littering the playground with beercans! Who's gonna clean it all up? Maybe Workman Jack? And in such a small community if your kid was missing wouldn't you go straight to the sheriff and then start banging on every door asking questions?

Radzinsky was so adamant that Miles return immediately to Dharmaville with the corpse and not ask any questions - wouldn't he have wanted to see Miles actually drive off?

An Asian man naming his baby the same name as the only other Asian person in a tiny community seems a little odd. But odder is that after Miles being on the island three years and the DI being an isolated compound that Chang wouldn't know Miles' name before Hurley told him. Maybe he didn't bother himself with the little people!

LOL for me was Hurley's offended 'not possible' when Miles questioned the smelliness of his famous garlic mayo!

If Miles has to have direct contact with a dead body, how did Young Miles sense Mr. Vonner in the motel room from out by the Coke machines across from the pool?

Bram doesn’t tell Miles he’s working for the wrong side. He says “You’re playing for the wrong team”. Is it a game?

This episode has really put my brain into overdrive. And it all has to do with Miles. Using Nikki’s bread crumb analogy for describing subjective time, Miles not only has found the bread crumbs he dropped in the past, but has actual encountered himself dropping those bread crumbs. He and baby Miles are walking side by side leaving bread crumbs in the same place at the same time. How can one person at two different stages of life be occupying the same space at the same time. I really need to do more research on this one.

If Miles doesn’t get off the island before 2004 he’ll be there at 57 when 27 year Miles arrives. Maybe some of the other survivors were already there when they themselves arrived. Maybe that’s why the others knew so much about them. They’d already been there.

Back in “LaFleur”, Miles was there when they came upon Amy and recently deceased Paul. Two others were also killed. Why didn’t Miles “sense” what really happened. Maybe Miles knows a lot more than we think he does.

Hurley: “Dude, I can keep a secret.” Since when?

What if the comedy team of Straume & Reyes turn out to be the key to everything?

What is that clicking noise we always here in the background when we’re in a building at Dharmaville? It seems to click about every 2 seconds. Is that a clock keeping track of slower time?

Nikki mentioned that Juliet changed from white to black clothes after Ben was taken from the infirmary. Now she is wearing RED! Uh-Oh!

This episode has some very funny and very moving moments. Love the "That douche is my dad" line. I wonder how many teenage boys have uttered that phrase?

It occurs to me that it must have been very emotional for Miles to find out that his father really did love him when he was a baby, because his mother had told Miles that his father never did loved him.

It occurred to me that the fact that Bram doesn't offer Miles any money but says that they can help Miles fill the whole in his heart, really does make them the good guys! You never know with lost though. They can make things look one way and then totally change up everything.

@ Nikki and Marebabe: I also looked closely at baby Miles, and I'm almost certain it is the blanket and not the onesie that has the Dharma logo on it; although, a Dharma onesie would be awesome!

@ Marebabe: How clever of you to question whether fillings would be magnetic or not. That never occurred to me. I do agree with you however, that with Lost you have to be willing to look past certain things, and just enjoy the ride.

@ Marebabe: How funny that you mention "The Princess Bride" -- my husband gave me that DVD for Christmas this year, so I have watched it several times recently.
That line about mostly dead and all dead really does fit with the things we have been seeing and discussing in season 5.

Star Wars is my all-time favourite movie, and Lost is my favourite TV show. So when I learned that there would be a Lost episode called "Some Like It Hoth", I pooped my pants!

@studiorose: True, Hurley should be able to spell bounty hunter. but, then again, in the pilot, he couldn't spell B-O-D-Y-S, either.

OMG, Naomi is GORGEOUS. I miss her :( I love miles not-so-subtly checking her out.

I love the way Eric Lange plays Radzinsky in these episodes! He is just so manic and out of control it is fun to watch. The way Eric Lange looks and acts as Radzinsky is just such a perfect match to the character.

@Paleoblues: You know for a while I was kicking around a theory that some of the 1977 815s ended up staying in the past and were on the island when their 2004 selves arrived. Could they be controlling everything from behind the scenes -- really interesting idea -- I guess we will find out soon!

Being a massive Star Wars fan made me automatically love this episode. Although I love every interaction between Hurley and Miles. I love Hurley's 'AHA!' moment in the van.

verification word: farker (seriously) - Nope. Not even touching that one.

Batcabbage: This is Ben Linus talking... I've taken over Nikki's account, and I just wanted to let you in on something.

Actually, maybe the term isn't used in Australia as often, but "fark" is a normal word here in North America. It refers to love of one's mom. It's specific to biker circles, for some reason. So next time you're over here, try it out: walk up to a particularly large, menacing-looking biker and call him a "motherfarker." He will LOVE it.

Trust me on this one.

@ Nikki - there you again with the 'separated at birth' comments!
'I have a confession to make: I love the word “douche.” It’s a GREAT insult.'
I love the word 'douche' too and have just used it in a story I'm writing, many many times! It's one of my favourite Lost lines - 'That douche is my Dad' It would make a great T shirt.

Does anyone else find Bram really creepy (or do you just find him palatable)?

Another impulse decision by Sawyer, punching Phil instead of conning him with some kind of excuse. The dude did say, after all, that after 3 years of working together he figured he would give Lafleur the benefit of the doubt.

This episode and Follow the Leader are the episodes where I started to like Miles. I didn't like him at first, and throughout early season 5 I was starting to warm up to him, and this episode just cemented it for me.

Miles’ ability still a mystery. Seems they had to make it smaller, in retrospect, but, as paleoblue points out, they are inconsistent WITHIN THE EPISODE. C’mon. Either he does or does not have super powers. There are rules for these sort of things.

Miles has great lines
“I’m in the circle of tr…” “Get Out!” HA
“The ditch had a gun” HAHA

I wonder if Miles ever finds his dad’s body

@marebabe – strangely, the term “mostly dead” is regularly used in our household, and most recently applied to Locke’s situation, though not entirely accurate.

word verification - seman. Seriously?

hahahahahahaha! Love that movie!

@Susan - no, Bram=creepy. My sister says, "Bram, Bram the muffin man," in a sing-song voice every time he comes on screen. It makes me laugh.

In regards to Miles' comment about the ditch having a gun, didn't Sawyer or someone say almost the same thing to Locke? Or am I thinking of something else?

I love this episode. I plan on watching it again on Father's Day. It is brilliant.

My wife loves the line when Hurley suggests to Miles that he could go over to his parents house and hold himself as a baby, or even change his own diaper.

I can wait to see how Bram and the shadow seekers play out in Season six.

I love this episode for many reasons, the Star Wars references, Miles and Hurley who are just hilarious together and of course seeing Faraday again at the end!

@ The shadow seekers
I think they must have eithier all been to the island before, or Jacob has visited them as Illana knew him when he came to visit her. It is however something I would love to have clearly answered for a change although with Lost I doubt that will happen!

I love the Miles flashbacks especially the one showing his punk stage, it remided me a lot of the character Ken leung plays in X-men who looked a little like that- now he was a docuhe.
Also we have a punk Miles, a goth Claire, what else? Perhaps Jack went through an Emo stage as a teenager, it would explain all those emotional teary moments!

Seeing Bram and the guys in the van, a thought occured to me. How many island related people are there off the island? There seems to be more people working for Ben or Eloise or Widmore off the island than are actually on the island. First you have everyone at Mittelos Labs, then these guys with Bram, then at Simon's Butchershop, then the one's helping Widmroe in Tunisia. And the list seems to go on with little snippets here and there. Just how big is this organization of being Others? Is it bigger than the Dharma Initiative? Remember when we thought the Others were just this rag tag bunch on the island, and only the island.

@Susan: I laughed at your use of the word "palatable". Another in-joke for the Nik-at-Niters!

Douche IS a pretty awesome insult.

And, of course, as a Star Wars fan, this one had me from the word go (AKA the title).

(Though I still quibble with Hurley's take on the story as described to Miles, but I let it go since he's trying to make a point). :)

Rebecca T. said...

@EvaHart: Jack in an Emo stage would be hilarious.

@Fred: The reach of the Others does seem to be pretty big. I mean, the way the woman in Tunisia reacts to Ben's pseudonym, the many passports he has, Jill in the butcher shop. How big IS the reach and what does it all mean?

Love all the comments! I'm so late to the party that practically everything's already been said.

I was thinking, after the fuss the landlord made, that he actually let Miles and his mom stay there, especially after he realized there was something 'off' with kid Miles!

Hurley's finally found a confidant!

Why is Kate so friendly with Roger anyway, knowing who he is? Does she see something in him that reminds her of Wayne, and feel a guilt obligation to him?

Hurley-"You're just jealous 'cause my powers are stronger than yours"
and "It's furry, furry fist!" hahahaha

Love Hurley's banter with Chang, "we should all hang out and get a beer or something"

How surreal for Miles to see himself on his dad's knee. I love that he got to realize that his dad really did love him, and cared about him. I just wish he could have been able to let his mom know.

I'm just catching up with your rewatch Nikki so if this was already mentioned and I missed it I apologize. Something I noticed about this episode that no one else has mentioned. When Kate is talking to Roger Linus at the swing set and drinking Dharma beer...listen to Roger's voice at the end when she walks away, the line "You wanna help Kate?" it sounds like Jack's voice. I played this back three or four times and I just can't get over this. Did anyone else notice this or am I just crazy??
