As We Begin Season 4...

If there is anyone out there who has fallen behind in the rewatch but has seen the series before, you could always jump ahead and join us now as we begin season 4. The following seasons 1 to 3 recap in 8 minutes, 15 seconds, is all anyone really needs. After all, Lost isn't about subtlety, is it?! ;)

My favorite part of that video was
"Sun is pregnant, Jin is sterile, What's up with that?"

I loved this when I first saw it, and I still love it. "Juliet brings Jack cheeseburgers." Narrator Gal has Ben's deadpan delivery and the speed-talking ability of that guy who gives us the fine print on car commercials.

I see that you have 3 episodes scheduled for this week, Nik, but 4 next week during American Thanksgiving and then 3 again the week after that. Might you want to move either the first episode for next week to this week or the last episode of next week to the following week? I say this as someone who's perennially behind, also knowing full well that anyone can either watch an extra episode this week on their own and/or catch up pretty easily if next week is tight, but I thought it worth bringing up.

Sorry for the extra eps during American Thanksgiving, my dear American friends!! Unfortunately it's too late to add another episode this week, and next week is 4, and the following week is 4 (it's the last week of S4 that's back to 3). What I would suggest is just watching extra this week and I'll post all 4 next week, but you'll have jumped ahead slightly before your holiday.

(If it's any consolation, we had 4 episodes the week of the Canadian Thanksgiving, too...)

When my sister and I first watched this we had to pause it after about three minutes because neither of us could breathe from holding in the laughter. We paused it, laughed helplessly for about five minutes (absolutely literally) then restarted it, laughed again and then immediately rewatched it. BRILLIANT :)

I'll be behind this week :( send up happy thoughts for me, I'm taking the GRE tomorrow :)

Jacob's. He made me do it. He hates all holidays... with the exception of Jakesmas.

Could Jacob be... Jacob Marley?

@Blam: Could Jacob be... Jacob Marley? YES! That explains all!

I hope the GREs went well, SM.
The Lost cast would be fun to plug into A Christmas Carol — not just the actors, but them in character, Muppets-style.
• Who'd be Scrooge? I think Locke, even though Sawyer is tempting due to his character arc on the show. Locke-Scrooge would be holed up in his Hatch, minding the computer rather than an adding machine, forcing Bob Cratchit to push the button even on Christmas Day.
• Since Walt is obviously Tiny Tim, Michael is Bob, trying to save up enough money to take Walt to the Dharma Initiative so that he can get his psychic powers under control — unless we keep the bum leg from the original, in which case maybe he needs Jack Shephard to "fix him"; I have no idea where to put Jack anyway.
• My joke about Jacob being Jacob Marley aside, we could plug Anthony Cooper into the Marley role, mostly 'cause I love the idea of him haunting Locke with the chains that Sawyer used to strangle him still around his neck, rattling into Locke-Scrooge's house, taunting him, "You couldn't even do it yourself, boy." "D-d-don't tell me what I can't do!"
• Hurley would be the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come. "The future's awesome, dude. I mean, it probably sucks for you, since you'll be dead and all, and there was that thing with Walt. But everybody else made it home okay from the Island. Desmond figured out that he could save Charlie if you went to the Hydra station instead. And they finally perfected astronaut ice cream."
• So is the Ghost of Christmas Past smug, bug-eyed know-it-all Ben, immortal Richard Alpert, or someone else? What about Christmas Present? How do we fit in the rest of the cast? I have to leave it here for now, so you guys go nuts. All I know is that the story ends with reformed Locke buying the largest Christmas Boar at the butcher shop and joining the Cratchits for dinner.

Oh werd, now I have plenty to mull over during my 5am shift at work tomorrow. Be prepared for a full cast assignment for Lost as the Christmas Carol.

btw Muppet Christmas Carol is my favorite Christmas movie of all time. I play the soundtrack year round :)

@Blam: For your "Jakesmas Carol" cast list, how about the lovely Claire for the Ghost of Christmas Past? At first, I only thought of her for the part because of her long, flowing blonde hair and angelic looks. But upon further reflection, I thought how perfect to have her playing a ghost, because right now we don't know if Claire is alive or dead or somewhere in between.

Blam said...

Claire's a good choice there, Marebabe; I love your point about her already being in some indeterminate ghost state. I had trouble thinking of where to place the women of Lost in particular, until I remembered that there are more characters (appropriately) in flashbacks to and sidewards-in-the-present glimpses of other people in Scrooge's life, although to use Kate or Juliet we might have to make Sawyer Scrooge instead of Locke. None of the Christmas Ghosts is explicitly female in the original, but women have been used in adaptations and parodies; I guess Claire makes the most sense, but it might be fun to have a parade of the dead, maybe approaching Scrooge as he's standing in the cemetery with the Ghost of Christmas Future, all looking as they did when they bit the dust.

Blam said...

Duhhr!!! As much fun as Hurley's little monologue was to write, Smokey is the Ghost of Christmas Future, who never speaks but looms large and dark and frightening. Unless he's the Ghost of Christmas Past, with his ability to flash scenes of Scrooge's life before his eyes.

Muppet Christmas Carol is a keeper, Sonshine. I saw it in the theater with mixed emotions, since Jim Henson had passed away and was no longer voicing Kermit, but the screening room was full of kids talking to the screen and singing and asking their parents questions, so it was hard to begrudge the characters, filmmakers, and Henson family moving on.

Nikki Stafford said...

I'm so behind on reading this thread, and as I was reading your cast list, Blam, I was thinking, 'No, Smokey for the Ghost of Christmas Future!' and then you beat me to it. Of course. I would also consider Hurley for Ghost of Christmas Present, but only because that ghost was depicted is a large, jolly man eating in many of the adaptations of it. I was also going to suggest that Ben is the Ghost of Christmas Past, Present AND Future because of his time traveling. :) But then again... that could be said of just about any of them.

Sonshine: Luckily, I saw Muppet's Christmas Carol at home. I say luckily because the guy who played Bob Cratchit was known to my husband and I as this guy in an indie film he starred in with none other than Naveen Andrews, where his character's name was (wait for it) "Muff Diver." So when they first showed Bob Cratchit, my husband and I said together, "Hey, it's Muff Diver!" THAT would have gotten us into a boatload of trouble in a movie theatre surrounded by children... ;)

Blam said...

Uh... Nik? Bob Cratchit was played by Kermit the Frog (voiced by Steve Whitmire). And I'm afraid to Google up an explanation.

Nikki Stafford said...

Whoops, you're right. The guy was playing Scrooge's nephew. He drops by the office near the beginning and chats with Kermit, and he urges his uncle to change his evil ways. I was thinking of him as Cratchit because of him being in the office. :)

Rebecca T. said...

Okay, so for the Cratchits I think we definitely have to cast Desmond for Bob, Penny for Emily and lovely baby Charlie is Tiny Tim :D

I like the idea of Claire as the ghost of Christmas Past and definitely Smokey for Yet to Come and I really vote Hurley for Christmas Present. Of all the Losties he's the one person who seems to be able to make the best of the present.

Then my brain does weird things, like suggesting to me that there be 2 Scrooges - like an odd couple roommate situation with both Locke and Jack being Scrooge. Locke's Marley is Cooper and Jack's is Christian and they both have the woman from their past that left them because of their attitudes, so Belle is Sarah and Helen.

Okay, I admit, I've been thinking about this WAY too much :P

PS The GRE went pretty well. I think I did decently. I'll get my scores in 2 weeks. Now comes the fun of applying to grad school. :)

PPS: Verification word is innists- people who stay at motels :D

How much do I love your word verifications, guys? I need to compile a list of all of your definitions. ;) As the admin, I don't get one. Dammit.

Congrats on the GRE, Sonshine! Keep us posted on how you do. Are you applying to schools nearby or far away from you?

I've been meaning to rethink the whole cast, SM, but haven't had time. Maybe I can revisit it closer to Christmas. Now I'm distracted by the thought of Jack and Locke in The Odd Couple, which would be hysterical. That led to mentally casting them in Waiting in Godot and then, believe it or not, imagining them in the old Mikey commercial for Life cereal, each shoving the computer back at the other: "Push the button." "I'm not gonna push the button; you push the button."

Ah hahahahahaha!!!!

Oh... this is why I love coming here so much. Who needs a life when you've got Nik at Nite?

And I'm applying to schools nearby, hoping to commute from home so I can save myself some money. Not going until the fall so school won't interfere with the final season of Lost (not really, but it's kind of nice it works out that way :P)
